How to get Wegovy, without the runaround.

Three legitimate paths: retail pharmacy, Novo Nordisk direct, and licensed telehealth. Current availability, what each costs, how long each takes, and the options to avoid at all costs.

There are three legitimate ways to get Wegovy in the US: (1) a prescription from your doctor filled at a retail pharmacy; (2) the NovoCare Pharmacy direct-to-consumer self-pay program ($499/month) with a prescription from any licensed provider; or (3) a licensed telehealth platform that handles the consult, prescription, and pharmacy shipment in one package. All three require a valid prescription from a US-licensed provider after a medical evaluation.

Every US retail pharmacy can fill a Wegovy prescription — the key is getting the prescription in the first place.

Current availability (Q2 2026)

The FDA officially removed Wegovy from the drug shortage list in February 2025 after Novo Nordisk expanded production capacity. All five dose strengths — 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg — are generally available at major US pharmacies and through NovoCare direct as of early 2026. Regional or pharmacy-specific stock-outs still occur occasionally, but the chronic shortages of 2022-2024 are over.

A consequence of the shortage ending: legal compounding of semaglutide by 503A and 503B pharmacies has largely ended, since compounding is only permitted during an FDA-declared shortage for medications on the FDA-approved list. Products still marketed as "compounded semaglutide" in 2026 are generally operating outside the legal framework and should be avoided.

The three legitimate paths

Path 1 — Primary care doctor + retail pharmacy

The traditional route. You see your PCP, discuss Wegovy, and if they agree you\'re a candidate, they send an e-prescription to your preferred pharmacy. If you have insurance, the pharmacy submits a prior authorization request; if approved, you pick up the medication at your copay. If denied or if you have no coverage, you either pay the retail cash price (~$1,349/month) or switch to the NovoCare self-pay program.

Pros: continuity of care with your regular provider; face-to-face consultation; easy integration with other medications and labs. Cons: appointment wait times; prior authorization delays (typically 5-14 days); retail cash price is substantially higher than direct alternatives.

Path 2 — NovoCare Pharmacy direct self-pay

Novo Nordisk launched NovoCare Pharmacy in 2025 as a direct-to-consumer program for uninsured and cash-pay patients. You need a valid prescription from any US-licensed provider, which you (or your provider) send directly to NovoCare. You pay $499 per month online, and the medication ships to your door from a mail-order pharmacy. You do not need commercial insurance; in fact, NovoCare is only available to people paying out of pocket.

Pros: lowest legitimate cash price anywhere ($499 vs $1,349 retail); convenient mail delivery; no insurance battles. Cons: you still need a prescription, so you need a provider; not covered by insurance (self-pay only); mail delivery timing.

Path 3 — Telehealth platform (fastest)

A licensed telehealth platform bundles the medical consult, prescription, and pharmacy fulfillment into one service. You fill out an online health questionnaire, sometimes do a brief video visit, and a US-licensed physician or nurse practitioner reviews your case. If approved, the prescription is sent electronically to a partner pharmacy and shipped to you within 1-2 business days. Pricing is typically flat monthly and includes the medication.

Pros: fastest path from "interested" to "injecting" — often same day; no doctor appointment needed; pricing is transparent and usually includes everything; licensed providers are responsible for the medical decision. Cons: not a replacement for a primary care relationship; must be in a state where the platform\'s providers are licensed.

Buying Wegovy at specific pharmacies

CVS Pharmacy

CVS carries Wegovy at most locations. Cash price typically runs $1,350-$1,450 per month. Insurance copays depend on your plan. CVS Caremark (the associated PBM) is a major processor of Wegovy prior authorizations and savings cards.

Walgreens

Walgreens stocks Wegovy. Cash price similar to CVS, $1,350-$1,450. Offers mail-order via Walgreens home delivery for patients with plans using Walgreens as preferred pharmacy.

Walmart Pharmacy

Walmart cash price is typically $10-$50 cheaper per month than CVS or Walgreens, around $1,320-$1,420. Some Walmart stores accept the NovoCare Savings Card.

Costco Pharmacy

Costco pharmacies are generally the cheapest retail option among major chains, with cash prices around $1,280-$1,380 per month. You do not need a Costco membership to use the pharmacy in most US states (federal law requires pharmacies to serve all customers). Costco cash price is still much higher than NovoCare\'s $499 direct program.

NovoCare Pharmacy (direct from Novo Nordisk)

The cheapest legitimate self-pay price. $499 per month for any dose. Available only to patients paying cash — you cannot combine it with insurance. Ordered online at NovoCare.com with a provider-sent prescription; ships from a contracted mail-order pharmacy.

Independent pharmacies

Pricing varies. Some independents negotiate directly with Novo Nordisk and may offer competitive pricing; others charge retail list. Worth calling if you have a preferred local pharmacy.

Getting Wegovy through telehealth

Since 2023, several telehealth companies have built services specifically for GLP-1 weight loss medications. The legitimate ones have these things in common:

  • They require a medical consultation with a US-licensed physician or advanced practice provider
  • They screen for contraindications (thyroid cancer history, pregnancy, prior pancreatitis)
  • They dispense FDA-approved Wegovy from a US-licensed pharmacy — not compounded semaglutide from unregulated sources
  • They publish clear pricing and do not require insurance
  • They provide ongoing follow-up care, not just a one-time prescription

Red flags to avoid in any online provider: no consultation requirement, no licensed provider review, selling "semaglutide" that is not Wegovy (often compounded), prices that seem impossibly low, shipping from outside the US, and requests for payment in cryptocurrency or wire transfer.

What to avoid

High-risk sources for Wegovy

Overseas online pharmacies — Counterfeit Wegovy has been documented in international supply chains, including fake Novo Nordisk packaging with incorrect or no active ingredient.

"Research chemical" semaglutide — Sold online as "not for human use". It is not manufactured under any quality standards and may be contaminated, under-dosed, or contain other peptides entirely.

Social media sellers — Telegram, Instagram, and Reddit have active black markets for diverted or counterfeit Wegovy. These are illegal and medically dangerous.

Unregulated compounding — Since the FDA declared the shortage resolved, most legal compounding of semaglutide has ended. Ongoing "compounded semaglutide" offerings are likely operating outside the legal framework.

Who qualifies for a Wegovy prescription

To be prescribed Wegovy legally in the US, you generally need to meet the FDA-approved label criteria:

  • BMI ≥ 30 (obesity), or
  • BMI ≥ 27 with at least one weight-related condition (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea)
  • No contraindications: personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN 2 syndrome, current pregnancy, or prior severe reaction to semaglutide
  • Age 12 and older (adolescents require pediatric BMI percentile ≥ 95th)

Telehealth providers follow the same criteria. A responsible provider will not prescribe Wegovy to someone whose BMI is below the label cutoff or who has contraindications, regardless of how much the patient wants it.

What to expect at your first fill

  1. Delivery or pickup — Wegovy ships in a temperature-controlled package and must be refrigerated on arrival.
  2. Packaging — A box containing four pre-filled single-use pens (one per week for a month).
  3. Dose — Your first fill is always 0.25 mg, the starter dose. Do not skip titration.
  4. First injection — Can be done at home. Our injection guide walks through it step-by-step.
  5. Side effects — Expect mild nausea in the first few days. See our side effects guide for management.
  6. Follow-up — Your provider (or telehealth team) should check in at weeks 2-4 to adjust or confirm titration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy Wegovy?

You can buy Wegovy at any retail pharmacy in the US with a valid prescription (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Costco, independent pharmacies), through Novo Nordisk's direct-to-consumer NovoCare Pharmacy program, or through a telehealth provider that ships from a partner pharmacy. You cannot buy Wegovy legally without a prescription, and you cannot buy it from overseas pharmacies for personal import.

Is Wegovy still on shortage?

No. As of February 2025, the FDA declared the Wegovy shortage resolved. Novo Nordisk has significantly expanded production capacity, and all doses are generally available at major US pharmacies and through NovoCare direct. This also means legal compounding of semaglutide by 503A and 503B pharmacies has largely ended.

Can you buy Wegovy online?

Yes, legally and safely. Several licensed telehealth platforms can evaluate you online, issue a prescription if appropriate, and ship Wegovy from a partner US pharmacy. The legitimate services require a medical consultation with a US-licensed physician or nurse practitioner, verify your identity, and dispense only FDA-approved Wegovy (not compounded variants). Avoid any website offering Wegovy without a prescription or consultation — those are almost certainly illegal and unsafe.

Is it safe to buy Wegovy from Canada or Mexico?

Personal importation of prescription drugs from other countries is technically illegal under US federal law, though the FDA generally does not enforce it for a personal 90-day supply with documentation. However, the risks are significant: counterfeit Wegovy has been found in international supply chains, cold chain integrity may be compromised, and you have no recourse if the medication is fake or mishandled. For these reasons, the FDA strongly advises against it.

How long does it take to get a Wegovy prescription?

Through a primary care physician: typically a scheduled office visit (days to weeks for an appointment), then a prior authorization process with your insurance (5-14 days). Through telehealth: often same-day or within 24 hours — you complete an online questionnaire and video or messaging consult, and if approved, the prescription is sent electronically to a partner pharmacy that ships within 1-2 business days.

Do I need insurance to get Wegovy?

No. You do not need insurance to get Wegovy. Through NovoCare Pharmacy, uninsured patients can pay $499 per month directly to Novo Nordisk. Telehealth providers also offer self-pay options that do not require insurance. Insurance can reduce your cost substantially if your plan covers weight loss medications, but it is not required to obtain a legal prescription or fill it.

What should I avoid when buying Wegovy?

Avoid: websites selling Wegovy without a prescription or consultation; international mail-order pharmacies shipping from countries outside normal regulatory oversight; "compounded semaglutide" from unregulated sources; any product not in the original Novo Nordisk box with intact seals; social media sellers or in-person offers. All of these carry significant risks of counterfeit product, contamination, incorrect dosing, or fraud.

Can my doctor prescribe Wegovy?

Any US-licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant who can prescribe controlled medications in your state can prescribe Wegovy. It does not require a specialist. Primary care providers prescribe the majority of Wegovy in the US. If your primary care provider is unfamiliar or reluctant, obesity medicine specialists, endocrinologists, and telehealth providers are also options.
